Scindapsus, often called satin pothos, are slow, trailing aroids with velvety, silver-marked leaves. Their thick leaves store water, which makes them forgiving of missed waterings.
Quick facts
- Light: Medium to bright indirect light. Silver and variegated markings stay sharpest in bright light; direct sun can scorch the leaves.
- Water: Let the top 4–5 cm (about 2 inches) of the mix dry before watering. This genus is more sensitive to overwatering than to underwatering. Slightly curling leaves signal thirst.
- Soil: Light, airy mix with bark and perlite. Drainage holes are essential.
- Temperature and humidity: 18–29 °C (65–85 °F). Normal household humidity is fine.
- Growth: slow in low light, steady in bright light. Pinch the tips to keep the plant full.
- Feeding: balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every 3–4 weeks in spring and summer; none in winter or low light.
- Pets: toxic to cats and dogs if chewed (contains calcium oxalate crystals). Keep out of reach.
Moonlight, marble and compact types
Compact and marbled types (Treubii Moonlight, Jade Satin Marble Queen, Mint) grow slowly. Keep them bright but out of direct sun, and avoid cold, wet soil, which is the fastest way to lose one.
Common problems
- Soft yellow leaves, mushy stems: Overwatering and root rot. Unpot, trim rotten roots and repot in fresh, dry mix.
- Curling leaves: Thirst. Water thoroughly once the mix is dry.
- Fading silver markings: Not enough light.
- Brown tips: Very dry air or salt build-up. Flush the pot with plain water.
