Monstera are fast-growing tropical climbers loved for their glossy, split leaves. They are forgiving once settled, and variegated forms such as Albo and Thai Constellation simply need a little more attention.
Quick facts
- Light: Bright, indirect light, a metre or two from an east window or a lightly filtered south or west window. Avoid direct midday sun, which scorches leaves, especially the white areas of variegated plants.
- Water: Water thoroughly when the top 2–3 cm (about 1 inch) of the mix is dry, then let the excess drain. Never leave the pot standing in water. Overwatering and root rot is the most common cause of decline.
- Soil: A chunky, fast-draining aroid mix: potting soil with orchid bark, perlite or pumice and a little coco coir. Use a pot with drainage holes.
- Temperature and humidity: 18–30 °C (65–85 °F). Normal household humidity is fine; 50–60% or more encourages larger leaves. Keep away from cold drafts and heaters.
- Support: a moss pole or trellis lets the plant climb and produce larger, more split leaves.
- Feeding: balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every 3–4 weeks in spring and summer; none in winter or low light.
- Pets: toxic to cats and dogs if chewed (contains calcium oxalate crystals). Keep out of reach.
Variegated Monstera
Variegated Monstera (Albo, Thai Constellation, Aurea) grow more slowly than green ones. The white and cream areas contain little chlorophyll, so the plant needs bright indirect light to keep growing, yet those areas burn easily in direct sun. If a stem starts producing all-green leaves, prune it back to a node that still shows variegation.
Common problems
- Yellow lower leaves: Usually overwatering or poor drainage. Let the mix dry out and check the roots.
- Brown, crispy edges: Dry air, underwatering or direct sun.
- Leaves without splits: Too little light, or a young plant. Move to brighter light and add support.
- Brown patches on white areas: Sunburn or very dry air. Filter the light.
